Hiking Trip in the South
Hiking Trip in the South
This journey takes you to the fascinating south of Armenia, a region filled with wild landscapes, historic monasteries, and impressive peaks. Southern Armenia is known for its untouched nature, remote villages, and centuries-old history, reflected in its ancient sites and monastic complexes.
A highlight of the trip is the Tatev Monastery, perched on a high plateau above the Vorotan Gorge. Once an important spiritual and cultural center, the monastery is accessible via the famous “Wings of Tatev” cable car, the longest reversible aerial tramway in the world. The ride offers breathtaking views of deep gorges and lush green valleys.
Another adventure awaits with a hike to the Lichk Waterfalls, hidden amidst Armenia’s pristine nature. The trail leads through picturesque landscapes, past clear streams and dense forests. The waterfalls provide a refreshing backdrop for a well-earned break and a cool respite.
For mountain lovers, climbing Mount Khustup is an absolute must. This sacred peak offers a challenging yet rewarding ascent, with breathtaking panoramic views from the summit. The crisp mountain air and stunning scenery make the climb an unforgettable experience.
A cultural highlight of the trip is the Vahanavank Monastery, a hidden gem from the 10th century that once served as a spiritual center for the kings of Syunik. The ancient walls whisper stories of the past, while the surrounding forests create a peaceful, meditative atmosphere.
Not far from the Iranian border lies the town of Meghri, known for its fertile valleys and unique frescoes in ancient churches. In this charming city, one can feel the influence of the many cultures that have met here over the centuries, reflected in its architecture, local traditions, and way of life.
Another natural gem on the route is Lake Tsakkari, hidden deep in the mountains. After a hike up Mount Aluk, we reach this idyllic alpine lake, surrounded by tranquil forests and lush meadows—a perfect place to relax and take in the serenity of nature.
A journey into history awaits at the mysterious cave village of Khndzoresk, a unique open-air museum where centuries-old cave dwellings are carved into the cliffs. A spectacular suspension bridge connects the two sides of the gorge, offering stunning panoramic views. Until the 1950s, Khndzoresk was still inhabited, but in 1958, Soviet authorities relocated its residents to a newly built village above the original settlement. Today, the abandoned caves stand as silent witnesses to a once-thriving way of life.
The journey concludes in the historic city of Goris, one of Armenia’s oldest towns, famous for its dramatic rock formations, ancient cave dwellings, and 19th-century stone houses with red roofs. Located at 1,385 meters above sea level, Goris blends rich cultural heritage, Soviet-era influences, and breathtaking landscapes, making it a must-visit destination.
